Institute for Functional Medicine
The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) is involved in training physicians to effectively treat and prevent chronic diseases using the Functional Medicine model. The motto of IFM is Changing the way we do medicine and the medicine we do. Its mission statement is to serve the highest expression of individual health through the widespread adoption of Functional Medicine as the standard of care.
Despite our spending a larger and larger percentage of Gross National Product on health care, we are suffering an epidemic of chronic diseases . These disease, such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and neurologic diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS are shortening our life spans and lowering the overall quality of life for millions of people. Conventional medical care is extremely expensive and often does a poor job treating these conditions. For most patients, the Functional Medicine paradigm (used in conjunction with more traditional medical treatments) appears to be a better option for preventing and treating chronic medical conditions.
IFM is involved in training medical practitioners, setting proficiency standards for practicing Functional Medicine, and developing new medical research models. IFM is attempting to integrate Functional Medicine into medical school and residency education. Functional medicine can improve medical outcomes and reduce costs.
